Selected Reading: The Fallacy of “Open” by Sava Saheli Singh. Link: https://bright.uvic.ca/d2l/le/content/144866/viewContent/1260427/View
This reading unpacks many issues that we might face when we learn and do scholarly work in the open. First of all, the author contends that access to OER is not sufficient to define the term ‘open’. ‘Open’ requires digital users to make good use of their digital identity and make the online sphere a positive and democratic place that allows different ideas, conversations, and knowledge to be transferred and flow.
If we abuse the digital environment, for example, misuse social media platforms, such as invading others’ privacy, discriminating against people of colour, or other minority groups (eg. share and repost racism/sexism comments), one day what we put out in the digital world would come back at us.
As we are trying to learn in an ‘open’ environment, the author suggests that we need to have a good online reputation to draw more researchers/scholars/educators attention. In this way, we can felicitate a professional learning network where members in the PLN can support each other and create more knowledge.
